The Pros and Cons of Articulating TV Mounts

TV mounts with articulating arms are popular among our clients! We find about half of all our installs are done with an articulating mount (full motion mount). These mounts allow you to adjust the position of your TV to get the perfect angle and minimize glare. However, there are pros and cons to using a TV mount with articulating arms that you should consider before making a purchase.

Pros

Versatility

The biggest advantage of using a TV mount with articulating arms is the flexibility it provides. You can adjust the position of your TV to suit your needs, whether you want to watch from the couch, the dining table, or the kitchen. If you plan to view your TV from multiple different viewing angles than this is the mount we recommend. The versatility allows you to easily and quickly change the angle of the TV. With an articulating arm, you can easily move the TV to get the perfect viewing angle and minimize glare. As the sun moves throughout the day you can move your TV to multiple angles to reduce the glare.

Open Concept Room

An articulating or full motion mount is great to use in an open concept room. Most modern homes have open concept style living rooms/ dining rooms/ kitchens. A full motion mount will allow you to adjust the TV depending where you are in the different rooms.

Space-saving

TV mounts with articulating arms can help save space in your room. By mounting the TV on the wall, you free up floor space and create a sleek, modern look. Plus, when you're not using the TV, you can simply move it out of the way to make room for other activities.

Better viewing experience

With an articulating TV mount, you can adjust the position of the TV to get the perfect viewing angle. Depending on the location of your TV this can help reduce eye strain, neck pain, and discomfort that can occur when watching TV for extended periods.

Cons

Cost

High cost for full motion mount

Articulating (full motion) mounts are some of the most expensive you can buy for a wall mounted installation. It has more moving parts than a typical fixed/ tilting mount and also needs to be much more sturdy. The parts and mechanisms in the mount allow for the movement of the TV. If you're on a tight budget, a fixed or tilting mount may be a better option.

Complexity

Articulating mounts are much more complex to install than fixed mounts. You need to make sure you have the right tools and follow the instructions carefully to ensure that the mount is installed properly. If you are doing the installation yourself make sure to give yourself enough time to complete the project. If you are not confident in your TV installation skills, it might be best to contact a professional for help.

Weight limit

TV mounts with articulating arms have a lower weight limit than a titling or fixed mount. This is because the articulating mount allows for the TV to be pulled away from the wall. The further away the TV is pulled the more stress is applied on the mount, bolts and screws in the wall. If the articulating mount is fully extended from the wall the stress of a light TV can be hundreds of pounds at the point of the screws in the wall.

Make sure to always check the weight limit of the mount before purchasing it to ensure that it can support your TV. A professional TV installer can source or recommend the appropriate mount for your TV.

Small Rooms

If you have a small room then an articulating/ full motion mount might not be for you. If your room is small you most likely will not use the capabilities of the motion built into the mount. If you will not be using this motion we recommend buying a fixed or tilting mount to save money.

TV mounts with articulating arms can be a great choice if you want a versatile, space-saving, and comfortable viewing experience. However, they do come with a higher cost and complexity of installation, and you need to be aware of the weight limit. If you're not sure whether an articulating mount is right for you, consider your budget, TV size, and installation skills before making a decision.
